Bordeaux is transforming. The world’s most famous wine region has been in crisis for years. There is an oversupply of wine in the entry-level segment, leading to the uprooting of thousands of hectares of vines. The region’s premium wines are no longer as sought-after as they were 15 years ago; consequently, many merchants’ inventories remain well-stocked despite falling prices.
Nevertheless, Bordeaux has much to offer, thanks to numerous smaller estates producing handcrafted wines that are both affordable and thoroughly enjoyable.
Château Carbonneau is one such estate. This biodynamically certified winery is located in the eastern part of the region, within the Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux AOC. The 19th-century château is lovingly managed by Franc de Ferrière. In addition to winemaking, the estate raises cattle and offers guest accommodation. I was won over by the wines because they reflect their terroir while offering a modern interpretation. "Pur Jus" is a fruit-forward blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Malbec. The 2023 vintage was awarded "Best Buy" status by *Wine Enthusiast*.
