2021 Fayolle Crozes-Hermitage Les Pontaix Rouge
The Pontaix smells of cherries, black pepper and blueberries. It is powerful and intense on the nose. It is also full-bodied on the palate with an intense structure and a long finish.

Syrah can be found in all corners of the wine world. The most famous Syrah wines can be found in the northern Rhone, but most wine-producing countries now produce one or two top Syrah wines. Nevertheless, the variety still lacks the glamorous reputation that Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir can claim for themselves. Why are we still waiting for Syrah to make a breakthrough?
Syrah is down to earth. The grape variety is wild and reminiscent of the simple life in the countryside. The aromas of cherry and black pepper that characterize this variety are often accompanied by notes of bacon, leather, olive tapenade, and country air (a euphemism for cowshed aromas ...). On the palate, the wines are often fresh, juicy, and structured. Great Syrahs can age for decades and gain complexity. Syrah's endearing nonchalance and unpretentiousness are beguiling, and for me, the variety belongs in the ranks of the world's best grape varieties.
Domaine Fayolle Fils & Fille is a winery that has been dedicated to this grape variety for many years. The estate is located in the small, winding village of Gervans in Crozes Hermitage and cultivates vineyards in Crozes and Hermitage. It is almost impossible to reach by car because the road and driveway are so narrow. Perhaps this is the reason why the Domaine is not yet as famous as it should be. It's not because of the quality, as the wines are among the best that the northern Rhone has to offer.
