Louis M. Martini crossed the Atlantic and North America in 1899, at the tender age of 12, to meet his father in San Francisco, the world looked very different. When he embarked on the same journey in the 1920s, this time after successfully completing his training as a winemaker, the United States had changed again. Prohibition threatened to cross his dream of owning his own winery.

Where there's a will, there's a way, and so he specialized in selling grape concentrate for home winemaking and in the production of mass wine. In 1933, the young Louis finally built his own winery, even before Prohibition was lifted.

So much pioneering spirit was rewarded and today the name Louis M. Martini adorns many bottles. For me, the Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon in particular is a price-pleasure hero. The wine is typically Californian, but still affordable and can easily mature for 10-20 years. The excellent 2018 vintage is available from me at a super special price - only while stocks last.

The wine smells of ripe cherries, cassis and cigar box. On the palate, it shows power and fullness, grippy tannins and a long finish.
