When an outstanding vintage meets an exceptional vineyard site in one of the world’s most renowned wine regions, all that’s needed is a talented winemaker to create something truly great. Julien Mus of Domaine de la Graveirette in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, southern France, has been producing wines with strong character for many years; however, he has only been bottling the “Puy de Safre” parcel separately for just under a decade.
This small vineyard is planted exclusively with old Grenache vines. The 60- to 80-year-old, gnarled vines yield only small harvests, but in return produce small, highly concentrated, and aromatic grapes. The sandy vineyard is cultivated biodynamically and carefully harvested by hand. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a rigorous selection process before being vinified with minimal intervention.
The 2019 vintage has produced exceptional qualities—and for me, the “Puy de Safre” ranks among the most impressive wines I have tasted this year. It combines elegance with power, freshness with depth, and impresses with its remarkable complexity.
