Until the mid-20th century, Viognier was found almost exclusively in the Rhône Valley. Only the small AOCs of Condrieu and Château-Grillet focused on this aromatic grape variety, and it was there that it established its outstanding reputation. Around the turn of the millennium, Viognier became an international success story; today, it can be found in vineyards all over the world.

The variety produces aromatic wines of great complexity. In blind tastings, I was always grateful to have a Viognier in my glass, as its intense aromas of orange and peach are easy to identify.

On a balmy summer evening, Viognier’s intense aromatics are exactly what I crave. I particularly enjoyed the Viognier from the special Champauvins vineyard. The site is likely familiar to you, as the Champauvins red has been available from us for some time. The vineyard is separated from the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation by nothing more than a footpath. Viognier thrives here, and the wine combines explosive aromatics with an invigorating mouthfeel.

Viognier in its purest form. The wine offers aromas of orange, peach, and white blossoms. On the palate, it displays a wonderful balance between freshness and power. The finish is long and intense.
