Over the centuries, the Bordeaux region has become the most famous wine-growing region in the world. But why? The quality of the wines certainly has something to do with it, but many regions produce good wines. Bordeaux is large enough to be found on shelves worldwide, yet the Mosel, Barossa, and Mendoza regions are as well. So why is it that we all know Bordeaux?
Of course, there are many reasons for this, but one important one is that the region has long been able to deliver consistent quality with greater reliability than other wine-growing regions. A key factor in this is the Bordeaux cuvée. The region’s winemakers do not rely on a single grape variety, but primarily on the two main varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In years when Cabernet has trouble ripening, Merlot takes the lead. If the Merlot rots, the winemaker can rely on the thick-skinned Cabernet.
This is also the case with La Verrière from Château Carbonneau. The blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot was aged for twelve months in barriques and is now slowly coming into its own.
