The 70s and 80s were great for music, hairstyles, and fashion, but not so great when it came to wine. Thirsty baby boomers needed something to drink for their parties and often turned to sweet, cheap plonk. That’s how Liebfrauenmilch from Germany became an export hit, and Italian Lambrusco was the drink of choice at college parties, often consumed straight from the liter bottle.

Even today, there are terrible Lambruscos out there, but there are also really good ones—like the one from Cavaliera. Owner Lorenzo draws on traditional methods. The wines are fermented in the bottle and aged dry. Thanks to its high quality, his Lambrusco has won tastings in recent years and received more press attention than a Lambrusco typically gets. This wine, aged on the lees in the bottle for over two years, is aromatic, refreshing, and long-lasting.

The wine is dark red with a fine, pink foam. It has an intense aroma of ripe cherries, blackberries, and black tea. The carbonation tingles on the palate, and the wine is juicy and intense, with fresh acidity and good length.
