GSM on a label usually indicates a popular blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. These varieties were first blended together in the southern Rhône. Today, blends of Grenache, Syrah and/or Mourvèdre are made all over the world.

Grenache and Syrah in particular play different roles in this combination. Grenache brings a light colour, red berry aromas and a powerful texture. Syrah contributes a deep red colour, firm tannins and fresh acidity. Together, they offer the best of both worlds.

With the new vintage of Kottabos, Reenen Borman has once again bottled a particularly harmonious blend of Grenache and Syrah. Neal Martin of Vinous rated the previous vintage as "Excellent", and I agree with him. With Kottabos, Reenen was aiming for balance rather than concentration. The wine is aromatically complex and "crunchy".

The wine has aromas of ripe strawberries, raspberries and pepper. The nose is layered and elegant. On the palate, it is juicy and velvety, with fresh fruit flavours on the long finish.
