Searching for Sugar Man is one of the most impressive music documentaries of recent decades. The singer Rodriguez was a great artist, but his records didn't sell. At least, that's what he believed. In South Africa, which was largely isolated at the time, his songs were celebrated and the musician was revered. It was not until the 1990s that Rodriguez learned he was a star there, and decades after the release of his albums, he filled stadiums in South Africa.

The story of today's wine is not quite as dramatic. The parallel – apart from the similarity in names – is that it is highly acclaimed in South Africa and has already attracted the attention of some critics. Outside South Africa, however, very few people know about “Sons auf Sugarland.” Neal Martin regularly rates it 95+ points for Vinous, placing it in the same category as the best Syrahs in the world.

A Syrah created in partnership between winemaker Jozua Joubert and cellar master Reenen Borman tells a story all its own. The pure Syrah fruit from granite is fermented with stems and skins and shows the elegant and wild side that I look for in great Syrahs.

The wine smells of herbs, ripe cherries, olive tapenade, and violets. The tannins are grippy but well integrated, and the finish is exceptionally long.
