One of South Africa's most exciting wineries is emerging from a godforsaken piece of land. Ironically, the Patatsfontein winery was named after a sweet potato field. The location is extremely dry and rich in slate and is located in the so-called Little Karoo. However, this wine shows that the location is better suited to grapes than potatoes.

The talented Reenen took over the reins of the winery in 2015. He gradually revitalized the old vineyards and now produces truly unique Chenin Blancs (aka Steen) and Colombards. The remarkable climatic conditions and the poor, slate-rich soil give these wines an initial reductive note, which lends the taste a depth of complexity and multi-layeredness.

The wine is a cuvée made from roughly equal proportions of Chenin Blanc and Colombard. It has aromas of ripe apple, pear, and toasted bread. On the palate, it is both bold and refreshing with a long finish.
