2023 Boschkloof Syrah
2023 Boschkloof Syrah
The wine opens with aromas of cherries, blackberries, white pepper, and lavender. On the palate it is intense and multi-layered, with firm tannins and a fresh, invigorating acidity.

I drink too little Syrah. Well, to be precise, I do drink Syrah from time to time — but after every good Syrah I find myself thinking: I drink too little Syrah. The grape variety is incredibly versatile, transports its origins directly into the bottle, and awakens all the senses. One of the rising stars on the Syrah firmament is Reenen of Boschkloof. His Syrahs have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, and his flagship Syrah "Epilogue" has garnered enormously high scores. The 2023 Epilogue was just awarded 99 points by Tim Atkin MW.
But the new vintage of his entry-level Syrah also has a lot to offer. The grapes grow on granite and are partly processed as whole clusters. The must is spontaneously fermented and then aged for 14 months in predominantly used barriques. The result is a complex Syrah with great typicity — a wine that combines power and freshness while remaining remarkably good value.
