The nose shows ripe blackberries, violets, smoke and red cherries. On the palate it's very direct and precise, with fine tannins and a long finish.

I get it … The Supermondeuse "La Mort" from the last mailing sounded exciting, but the price put some of you off? So today I've got the wine that shows, at a friendlier price, what the Mondeuse grape can do in Savoie.
Mondeuse is an ancient variety, said — according to legend — to have been described by Pliny the Elder almost 2,000 years ago. It shares a parent with Syrah, and stylistically the wines often remind me of a Cornas from the northern Rhône. Mondeuse plays an important role in Savoie, though by volume it's a footnote worldwide, with only a few hundred hectares planted.
What fascinates me about this variety is its clear aromatics, its firm structure and its low alcohol. No winemaker coaxes more out of it than Mathieu von Chevillard, who farms some of the best Mondeuse vineyards around.
