2019 Chevillard Mondeuse
2019 Chevillard Mondeuse
Notes of ripe cherries, blackberries, and herbs rise from the glass. On the palate, the Mondeuse is straightforward and intense, with fine tannins and a long, refreshing finish.

Yes, I do have a soft spot for obscure grape varieties. The variety used to make today’s wine is so rare that no one can blame you if you’ve never heard of it. It’s grown in Savoie and Switzerland, as well as in homeopathic quantities in other parts of the world. But the fact that this variety is obscure isn’t the only reason I’m writing about it here. In the right hands, Mondeuse can produce outstanding wines. Very good examples are reminiscent of Beaujolais Cru, combined with a great Cabernet Franc from the Loire.
Matthieu Goury of Chevillard also works with low yields and extended aging in old barrique barrels for his Mondeuse. He practices organic farming in the vineyard, and in the cellar, Matthieu uses almost no machinery, producing artisanal wines in the truest sense of the word. His Mondeuse has a low alcohol content, yet it possesses great radiance and complexity. Unfortunately, I only have a few bottles of the 2019 vintage left in stock…
